WINDS OF CHANGE

This stunning image of the exposed main stage photographed by Guy Baldock echoes imagery from Baz Lurhman's film 'Romeo & Juliet'.

The main stage, exposed to the elements during its demolition in August 1991,  was vast and was rarely used in later years. In years gone by it hosted many concerts by the VMRC orchestra and male voice choir as well as the world-famous Luton Girls Choir. During the war the 'Workers Playtime' radio show was broadcast from the stage and featured child-star Petula Clark.

The Griffins only used it occasionally. The stage was just too vast (about two and a half times bigger than the Library theatre) as was the canteen hall itself which also suffered from poor acoustics The Griffins occasionally used the stage to build sets and rehearse on..
